Although consumer confidence was up 15 points in November and holiday shopping increased 8.7% on Thanksgiving weekend compared to last year, consumers are still being cautious with their spending. Many businesses are searching for a way to attract customers, and establishing a competitive advantage online may be critical for their future success.

Start by making sure your website has the basics covered. As we tell our San Francisco web design clients, a good website is clear, concise, and clutter-free. Does your site load easily and fit the screen right? Are the graphics effective? Is the font easy to read? Is the text properly spelled, grammatically correct, and not the length of a novel? Is the website easy to navigate? Is contact information easy to find? Internet users will navigate away quickly if they don’t like your website, so make sure it’s a place that people will want to stop and stay awhile.

Worst Websites

Your website should not look like an old MySpace page. (Hat tip to webpagesthatsuck.com for finding this gem.)

Then ask yourself this question: “What can I offer customers that my competitors don’t?” The answer isn’t necessarily offering lower prices; you can gain a competitive edge by simply having a better user interface, providing easy online shopping, carrying a wider variety of products and services, offering rewards for loyalty, and so on. Once you choose the thing that makes your company stand out, shout it from the rooftops!

When designing the website of Domicile, an interior design firm in San Francisco, Zen Den sought to take the idea of an online portfolio to the next level. After conducting some competitive research, we designed Domicile’s portfolio to display multiple views of each design, describe the major features of each project, and allow viewers to compare each type of room side-by-side. Far more than just a gallery of thumbnails, this online portfolio gives a far richer idea of Domicile’s extraordinary design capabilities than some of its competitors’ websites do.

Gold is a hot commodity right now, and the number of businesses offering cash for gold has grown exponentially in the past few years. Goldrush Stores stands out from the crowd by highlighting the environmental benefits of recycling gold. The website explains that gold mining deteriorates the surrounding environment and generates huge amounts of waste—twenty tons for the gold to make one ring!

“By recycling your gold, silver, or platinum jewelry you are becoming an active member in protecting the environment by reducing the amount of waste used in the commercial gold mining process. And the icing on the cake is that you receive instant CASH for your efforts!” explains the website.

Social networks are a powerful source of word-of-mouth advertising, so be sure to set up Facebook and Twitter accounts for your company. Use contests and giveaways to help attract a fan base and spread brand awareness.

Of course, having a great website won’t really give you an edge unless people can find it. Search engine optimization (SEO) is critical to your online success. For example, say you have a law firm in San Francisco that specializes in family law. If a potential customer googles “divorce lawyer San Francisco,” and your website shows up on page 12, they are never going to find you because people rarely look past the first few pages. If you want to be visible online, you need to take steps to make your website friendly to search engines.

SEO is an ongoing process, and can take some time to build. There are some things you can do on your own; links from Facebook and Twitter, using keywords in the content, and making regular updates will all help. But a big part of SEO is back-end content, and this should be done by a professional. See “3 Quick SEO Case Studies” for more information about SEO.

Since the early days of the Internet, one of the problems that has plagued web developers is compatibility: a website that displays perfectly on one browser may be full of errors on another. Compatibility errors may include fonts displaying slightly differently, pieces of code displaying when they should be hidden, extra white space, images showing up in the wrong place, or even website errors that cause the browser to crash. The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) was formed way back in 1994 to establish coding standards, and has been urging browsers to become standards-compliant ever since—an uphill battle.

These days, compatibility issues tend to fall into three categories: cross-browser, different versions of a browser, and mobile vs. desktop.

Cross-Browser Compatibility

With the more recent proliferation of web browsers, browser compatibility has become an even more important issue. According to Ars Technica, as of October 2011, Internet Explorer has a 49.59% market share, Firefox has 21.20%, Google Chrome has 16.60% and Safari has 8.72%, with various smaller browsers rounding out the rest. Designing a website that looks the same across all of those browsers can be challenging.

The simplest way to determine whether your website is working across various browsers is to run a cross-browser compatibility check. Browsershots is a free service that takes screen shots of a desired URL from multiple versions of several browsers. Adobe BrowserLab allows side-by-side or layered browser views to easily identify inconsistencies.

Compatibility Across Versions

All of the major browsers have been increasing their standards compliance with each new version released; the newest versions of Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome and Safari have all passed the Acid3 Test, widely considered to be the gold standard of compatibility.

Acid3 Test

Unfortunately, many people don’t bother to update their browsers very often. This is not a terribly large problem for Firefox, Chrome or Safari users, since even older versions of those browsers are fairly standards-compliant, and users of these browsers tend to update pretty frequently.

The issue is mostly with Internet Explorer. Although versions 8 and 9 of IE are fairly good in terms of compatibility, earlier versions were notoriously incompliant with browser standards, and 25.4% of IE users are still on versions 6 and 7 (that’s 13.38% of total desktop users).

Internet Explorer 6 vs. Internet Explorer 8

The benefit of ensuring compatibility among antiquated versions of any browser is largely dependent on the online search prowess of your target market. However, it is worthwhile to note that a gap will always exist between advances in browser technology and consumer adoption. One way to bridge this gap is to include browser update links on your website while informing visitors of its version compatibility.

Mobile Browsing vs. Desktop Browsing

Morgan Stanley estimates that mobile web browsing will overtake desktop browsing by 2015. As more and more people buy smartphones, the mobile browsing experience is becoming a very important consideration for web designers. We have already noted the importance of having a mobile website to enhance user experience, improve SEO and drive sales. Another good reason to have a mobile website is to eliminate browser compatibility errors.

One of the most noticeable browser errors on mobile devices is that Adobe Flash videos will not work on iPhones or iPads. Apple purposely set out to eliminate Flash in favor of HTML5—“Flash is a spaghetti-ball piece of technology that has lousy performance and really bad security problems,” Steve Jobs told biographer Walter Isaacson—and it seems to be working; Adobe recently decided to stop developing Flash for mobile platforms.

In the meantime, many websites have Flash videos that don’t work on iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch devices. Considering that 54.65% of mobile web use originates from Apple iOS products, making sure your website works well on Apple mobile devices is a good idea.

As we approach the end of the year, it’s time for Zen Den to look back at some of the trends that emerged in web design in 2011. While trends varied from streamlining to playing with new fonts to adding 3D graphics, the one unifying theme with new and redesigned websites was an enhanced user experience: websites are exploring novel ways to draw in viewers, keep them on the site, and make them want to return again. Zen Den highlights 3 major trends in web design and development in 2011 that illustrate this shift towards designing websites with the user in mind.

1) Simplification. Instead of drowning visitors in information, such as crowded menus, long pages of text, and repetition, many websites are discovering what Zen Den has known all along: less is more. Our design philosophy is defined as creating “powerful, clutter-free, and easily navigable” websites, an approach that works because it draws in viewers instead of overwhelming them.

For The Art of Health, a website dedicated to the relationship between creativity and wellness, Zen Den created a simple, yet beautifully designed and animated landing page that illustrates the core philosophy of the organization without saying a word.

2) Social Connectivity. One of the biggest advantages websites have over traditional print media is that they can be interactive. Why confine your website to blocks of text, when it could be a media-rich environment with videos and plugins that encourage viewers to share the site with their friends?

We recently created an eCommerce site for handbag and accessory designer Paulina Carcach that is loaded with interactive features. A video explains how the handmade purses are created, from concept to leather cutting to finished product. A photo gallery gives shoppers ideas for how to wear the bags. And the shop is equipped with a plugin that allows proselytizers to “like” or “send” any product link via Facebook.

The whole Paulina Carcach experience makes it easy and fun for shoppers to explore what the brand has to offer and share things they like with their friends. Soon, shoppers will even be able to design their own custom handbags on the site!

3) Mobile Websites. Nielson estimated in July that 40% of mobile users in the US have smartphones, and that number will probably become a majority by the end of the year. Smartphone owners love the convenience of pulling up a website from wherever they happen to be, but hate trying to navigate a website that’s not optimized for mobile devices. As we explained in an earlier post, 3 Reasons to Have a Mobile Website, creating a mobile site will enhance user-experience, improve SEO, and drive sales.

MagiCubes makes 3D promotional products designed to stand out from the crowd. We helped them expand into mobile eCommerce with a mobile site that optimizes the way users watch videos, browse products, and read reviews on their phones.

Would you rather have to call up your web developer every time you want to change your website, or just go in and do it yourself? If your website was set up using WordPress, the answer is obvious: DIY.

Once upon a time, managing web content required learning HTML, but not anymore. WordPress, originally developed as a blogging platform, has become the most popular content management system (CMS) for websites because of its wide range of features and ease of use.

Many Zen Den clients want our expertise in creating or redesigning their websites, but also want the freedom to make their own updates going forward. With WordPress, Zen Den clients can manage their own content, image galleries, blogs, and more.

For our client, Not for Sale Store, Zen Den Web Design integrated a robust ecommere system into Not For Sale’s existing WordPress theme. The non profit organization sells clothing and jewelry made by survivors and people at risk of human trafficking, and needed the ability to makes frequent updates to its ecommerce store and website, including stories of people who were saved from slavery and new items available in the online store.

Thanks to the simplicity of creating and modifying image galleries in WordPress, companies can easily manage and enrich their websites with professional photos of their work.

As a follow-up to Zen Den’s overview of various eCommerce platforms, we wanted to go a bit deeper with one of the fastest growing platforms out there: Magento. The greatest advantage of Magento is the platform’s robustness. The company bills itself as the “eCommerce platform for growth,” and Magento’s scalability, customizability, and variety of built-in marketing features back up that claim. Many large online merchants including Olympus, Vizio, OfficeMax, Nokia, Papyrus and Dockers have chosen to build and operate their online stores with Magento.

For companies with large and complex eCommerce needs, Magento is the best way to go. Unlike many other eCommerce platforms, multiple stores can be managed from one admin panel. For a company like The North Face, which operates on five continents in multiple languages and currencies, being able to centrally control the entire operation is a big advantage.

These days, simply showing one picture of an item and its price is not enough information to attract people browsing online; it needs to be an interactive experience. The customer interface of Magento stores can be endlessly customized with features that grab the attention of online shoppers. Items can have multiple images with zoom capability. Special pricing and free shipping deals can be displayed. Customers can rate and review products. Merchants can suggest complementary products or alternatives.

A potential customer looking at this stapler in the OfficeMax store, for example, can zoom in on the image, read ratings and reviews, see suggested staples to go with the stapler—smartly, the staples feature a “buy 2, get 1 free” offer to further entice the buyer—and see alternative stapler suggestions.

Magento’s marketing capabilities are more extensive than any other eCommerce platform. In addition to the interactive features and upsell opportunities on the shopping page, Magento helps merchants entice people to visit the store. Flexible coupons can be customized by target group, time period, product, categories, etc. and sent out as email newsletters.

For specific campaigns, merchants can attract customer and search engine attention by creating a landing page with an SEO-friendly URL. Right now, the home page of the cosmetics store Lush is directing customers to its landing page featuring Halloween-themed products, http://www.lushusa.com/shop/halloween/.

Magento’s power, flexibility, and range of features make it a smart choice for online merchants who are looking to grow a business.
